August 2022 Newsletter

Did you ever hear the saying “The more things change, the more they remain the same”?  Well, that has pretty much been our first two months as part of Service Express. Same iTech Staff, same iTech procedures, same iTech customers, and same iTech commitment to IBM i.  Don’t get me wrong, we are looking at some cool new tools to help us become more productive and efficient, but our commitment to IBM i hasn’t changed.

It’s what I told my staff on July first, and the reason why I choose Service Express. Service Express will bring a lot to the table, and help us continue our growth. You have heard me time and time again over the years talk about the “iTech Difference”, and that difference is the people.  My staff’s skills, knowledge, experience, and know-how. That is what makes the difference, and we are all still here. That isn’t changing.

Power10 Scale-Out Servers

Right now, it seems that everyone on the planet wants a Power10 server. That is all that I seem to be doing is configuring and building new machines. Hey, you won’t hear me complain, but it’s non-stop right now. Most of them are the scale-out servers that IBM announced on July 12th.  All the ones that we have done with internal storage are using the extremely fast NMVe modules instead of spinning disks. This is great for IBM i shops, as almost every AS/400, iSeries, and now IBM i machine over the last 30 years always seems to be I/O bound, and this fixes that problem. NVMe is even faster than SSDs, and at a cheaper price per GB. You can’t beat that.  One thing to know if you want to order a new HMC with your POWER10 is that there are some part constraints with CR2 HMCs, and IBM expects this to be resolved in November.

Save the Date

As I said, nothing here is changing. No one is leaving, and we are still going to do our iAdmin conferences. Of course, it will be the same quality conference we have done in the past, it will be packed with information, provided by your IBM i team here at iTech (now a Service Express company) who know what to do, when to do it, and how to do it when it comes to IBM i. You have heard me say it many times, we have the experience, the knowledge, and know-how. So, why are you still with your business partner?

The dates for iAdmin Fall 2022 are November 2nd and 3rd, and we will be providing more details as things unfold.  This is a $1,500 conference and we are providing it free of charge. Yup, free to everyone. One of our customers told me after the Spring iAdmin conference, “You should just provide the conference free for customers, and charge everyone else $1,200”. That was an interesting concept, but right now we are giving it away to everyone for free. We want to give back to the community that helped us grow and prosper. There is a limit of 1,000 people due to the webinar resources, so do register early.

Security is top of mind for businesses today.

Those running on IBM i, should also be aware of the potential security exposures that are on their machines. To help you learn what you need to know to defend your IBM i, we are hosting Tactical Security Day on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. This is a one-day virtual event dedicated to IBM i Security. We will have several sessions focused on helping you to defend your IBM i from unauthorized access. The link to the registration is below.

From all of us at iTech, thank you.  Of course, we couldn’t have done any of this without the amazing employees here at iTech that I am so lucky to work with each and every day.  It is our people that make us the company that we are, and I thank each and every one for their hard work. We aren’t going anywhere, nothing is changing.  Eventually, we probably won’t be wearing those sexy red shirts, but that is the only change I see coming.

Stay safe, enjoy you’re the rest of your summer and I look forward to seeing you at future events.
