The iTech Blog

Posted on April 16, 2020

Tuesday, April 14th was a big day for the IBM i community. It was announcement day for Technology Refreshes for IBM i 7.4 TR2 and IBM i 7.3 TR8.

In honor of announcement day, Lifetime IBM Power Systems Champion and President of iTech Solutions, Pete Massiello, wrote The Business Value of Keeping your Hardware and Software Current, which has been featured in the IBM 2020 iSight blog series.

There are many resources that go into detail of the refresh itself, including Steve Will’s announcement blog, and events like iTech’s Sips & Tricks Coffee Series where Pete Massiello and Steve Pitcher will be discussing their favorite things about the refreshes.

It is my pleasure to introduce to you a new product from iTech Solutions. We first developed this for our Managed Services (MSP) customers, and after so many great comments we decided to make it available to everyone.  While our MSP customers get this report daily, this report on our new offering will be sent our weekly.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you had an experienced IBM i System administrator give you a report each week on the status of your system?

Summer seems to have gone so fast as Labor Day weekend approaches.  Where did it go?  How come winter doesn’t seem to go as fast as summer?  I hope you were able to take some vacation, recharge your batteries, relax with family and friends, or visit some great locations. My summer was busy but I also had a chance to enjoy it.

One of the best parts of my job is visiting and helping customers.  Recently, one of the salespeople brought me on a sales call to a new prospects office.  The prospect was basically interviewing us. I will summarize our meeting with just a few of his questions.

He asked what separates us apart from other IBM Business Partners, since we all sell the same IBM hardware.

Without hesitation, I answered our IBM i knowledge, experience, and know how when it comes to your system.  Our team of experienced technical engineers has a wealth of experience, and we are able to use that knowledge to make sure the projects we are doing for you go smoothly and correctly.

The prospect liked that answer, but I told him there was more.  We give back to the IBM i community in the form of speaking, writing, blogging, newsletters, video technical tips, webinars, and podcasts.  We share our knowledge, and that helps everyone in our community.  He said that was pretty evident by everything we were doing.

Oh, by the way, they are now a customer. (more…)

iTech Solutions’ team members Richie Palma and Yvonne Enselman have been featured in the November 2018 issue of IBM Systems Magazine, advocating for developing young talent and women in the IBM i community.

Richie Palma, who is an IBM i Tech Solutions Consultant at iTech Solutions and IBM Champion for Power Systems, is a younger member of the IBM i community himself. In the article, Developing the Future, he expressed the need to encourage young new IBM i developers.

“Retirement is bringing in new people and new ideas to IBM i shops. People are starting to ask, ‘Why not?’ instead of ‘Why change?’”, Palma said.

While the need for young professionals in the IBM i community is growing, the need to bring more women into Power System centered careers is growing as well.

Yvonne Enselman, Director of Professional Services at iTech Solutions and COMMON Board Member, talks about how to get women interested and excited about careers in technology.

“It’s up to all of us to bring the next generation, which will be 50 percent women, into our thoughts and share our knowledge.”, Enselman said.
