July 2021 Newsletter

The summer is supposed to be a slow time, but we are going at a breakneck pace installing new machines, doing migrations, and OS upgrades. It seemed everyone was ready to move forward in June, and now we are extremely busy.

While I don’t get to go out on as many installations as I used to, I really enjoy going out with the team and installing new hardware, and watching the customer’s eyes light up at the speed of the new machine.  I don’t know really who is more excited, them or me, but I really love it.

Baseball and iTech are back. We missed last year due to the pandemic, and we were waiting to do some games this year, as soon as more people got vaccinated. Well, I am happy to announce two games this year: New Hampshire Fisher Cats on September 14th and Worchester WooSox on September 22nd.  We are going to require that all people in the suite be fully vaccinated.  I hope to see you out at one of the games, it should be fun, informative, and just getting back to normalcy.

We did a customer-only event last month on IBM i Disaster Recovery. As the Hurricane season is upon us, Tornados, and the rest of the summer weather here in the US, we thought it would be a great time to just go over what you should be doing to prepare for a disaster, what to do when a disaster strikes, backups, recoveries, Disaster Recovery, High Availability, Continuous Availability, Flash Copy, and everything that goes along with options you need to understand. We had some great customer feedback, which this was the information they needed to better plan out what to do to keep the company running. One customer said, “it was eye-popping the things that I never thought about, and now I have to worry about”. He sent me an email afterward and told me “thanks, now I won’t sleep for another few months while I work on these items you brought up”. While the intent certainly wasn’t to make my friend lose any sleep, I am glad that we brought to light many things that customers need to pay attention to, to ensure they can recover from various disasters/issues. We then followed this event with 3 workshop events in early July targeting Cold DR, Warm DR, and Hot DR/HA. In these events, we talked about the issues, the needs, the differences, and what you needed to start moving in that direction for Disaster Recovery. I have already been a firm believer in backups, mostly from a recovery standpoint. Yet, now with all the ransomware attacks, and other security exposures in the news, I think you have to be crazy not to have a well-tested and thought-out backup process.  Your recovery is only as good as your backups, and if your backups aren’t any good, neither will your recovery be any good.

Speaking of events, I can officially announce the dates for iAdmin Fall 2021. Save the dates for Tuesday, November 9th, and Wednesday, November 10th. For those that do not know about iAdmin, this event is a full 2 days of IBM i System Admin education and resources with main sessions, breakout sessions, live Q&A, networking happy hour, and more. More details to follow soon!

It is likely that you are familiar with iTech’s second to none in North America technical capabilities for IBMi.

We have provided our technical services to many of the world’s leading companies. But today we are asking you to honestly consider the following business proposition: Should your organization utilize iTech for your entire IBMi digital strategy; Hardware, Management, Backup/Recovery, Planning, Cloud, PTFs, Replication, Performance, and other System Management issues?

First, we want you to consider why a closer business partnership can be good for your core business which ultimately means the financial well-being and mission success of your organization. Over 95% of IBMi systems are used for mission-critical applications. The IBMi’s availability is paramount and its functionality critical. With the growing amount and complexity of data and variety of usage growing each year, any amount of downtime, lack of data availability, significant outage, or delayed availability can cost revenue of five or six figures – or more! At its simplest, having iTech analyze, design, and implement improved systems could provide value starting at 5 figures and going upward.

It’s time to look at switching to iTech Solutions as your IBM Business Partner and reap the benefits.

iBasics: IBM i Education for the Beginner System Administrator

There are so many offerings from iTech, that occasionally people do not know all that we are doing. I want to make sure you take advantage of our IBM i Admin Basics, which we refer to as iBasics.

We started this in November 2020, and it was originally a 14-week series, but we expanded this through at least the Fall of 2021. These weekly sessions will cover the basics of IBM i, helping new people be able to learn about IBM i System Admin. If you have someone in your company who would benefit from these, you can register for both upcoming and on-demand sessions at itechsol.com/ibasics. These will take place at 11 AM EST on Wednesdays.

Stay safe, wash your hands, wear that annoying mask, and take care of one another. Hopefully, we will get our vaccinations soon and life will return to normal. I look forward to seeing everyone soon at the many conferences we will be attending.
