March 2020 Newsletter

A month ago, we were talking about the end of support for IBM i 7.2, and now today the only topic on everyone’s mind is COVID-19, and justifiably so. The world has changed, how we interact with each other has changed, how and where we work has changed, and hopefully how we treat one another going forward will improve. Here at iTech Solutions, we’ve been closely monitoring the evolving situation with COVID-19. It has brought uncertainly and disruption to everyone and the unknown is a scary entity. I have taken the necessary steps to ensure we can continue to work in light of the pandemic, by enabling everyone to be able to work from home, restricting travel, and having us adhere to the recommended safety procedures. As well as purchased and implemented additional infrastructure to keep us functioning.

My primary concern is the health and safety of our team. If I can keep them safe, healthy, and secure they will be able to continue to do their job and serve your needs.  I remain on top of the situation, listening to the Centers for Disease Control, as well as the World Health Organization. While the situation around the virus remains fluid, my goal is to meet or exceed all provided guidelines. I have banned all non-essential travel, and we are doing everything in our power to work with our customers on everything remotely. For many of our customers, we have already had remote VPN access to your systems, so in these cases, things are continuing to work fine.

With everyone working from home, we started a new series “Sips & Tricks: Coffee with iTech”, and our first topic was IBM i Working from Home Tips & Tricks. We discussed different issues working from home from our panel of iTech staff that normally work from home year-round. We will continue to elaborate on this topic, plus add other timely topics. If you missed the live discussion, you can watch the recording here.

I normally work from our Danbury office, and I worked from home a few days this week, and it was certainly an adjustment, plus I thought I had everything I needed, and quickly found out that wasn’t the case. You don’t just open the laptop on the kitchen table, and pronounce you are working from home. There are do’s and don’ts as well, that will make your experience easier, as well as learning the work/life balance. So, tune in, and they will be recorded if you miss any.

The next Sips & Tricks topic will be How to Access Your IBM i without a VPN: Configuring and Understanding the Risks Involved , but if you need help right now, reach out to us, customer or not, and we will give you a hand.  If you haven’t set up a printer with Client Access or Access Client Solutions, it’s pretty simple once you do the first one.

The next thing in line with the virus and everyone keeping our “social distance” from each other is a 2-day virtual conference.  There are some great conferences that were recently cancelled or  postponed, so we thought why not offer a virtual conference where you can watch the topics from your desk or at home, and get the education that you need. There will also be a live Q&A session where we will answer your questions. We are offering the 2 day virtual conference free to anyone in the IBM i community, not just our customers.  I have to stop for a second and ask you though, is your IBM Business Partner doing this for you as well?  If not, why are you then not becoming an iTech Solutions customer?  It’s easy to switch, and we have the knowledge, experience, and know-how to help you succeed.  Maybe I am a little biased, but the facts speak for themselves.  Just ask yourself, is your Business Partner doing everything iTech is doing to help you succeed with your IBM i, or are they just cashing your check?

Here are the details of our upcoming conference.

We will be doing more webinars throughout the year, as we reach out to the IBM i community in new ways to help you leverage your investment in Power Systems and IBM i.

Stay safe, wash your hands, and take care of one another.   I look forward to seeing everyone when this is all over and shaking their hands.
