October 2020 Newsletter

October has been a busy month. Between installs, upgrades, PTFs, managed services, and creating new educational sessions, the staff at iTech has been burning the candle on many ends.

We had our iAdmin Fall IBM i System Administration conference last Tuesday and Wednesday, October 20th and 21st.  With 851 people attending the conference from 48 US states and 56 different countries, we were well represented from all over the globe. That is a lot of IBM i people together for 2 virtual days of conferences.

I have to say that my staff did an amazing job, and we received around a hundred emails telling us how people enjoyed the conference. It’s great when you can help that many people with their careers. We even had many of our competitors at our conference, but that’s ok — even they want to learn from the experts. You can still register and watch the replays if you missed the sessions live, at info.itechsol.com/iAdmin. This was a two-day live event, where you saw the speaker as they present, could ask questions, and feel like you had the best seat in the room. We had a packed Q&A session at the end with all of our speakers. As one of our attendees wrote “I cleared my schedule for two days so that I could concentrate on the sessions.  It was the best decision I made this year.  The speakers really knew their topics and answered every question that was asked.  Thanks for all the help”.

It was certainly an exhausting two days, but so glad we did it.

Here is a list of the sessions:

  • Anatomy of a Security Failure
  • BRMS Basics
  • Understanding the new POWER9 G models
  • Tuesday Lunch Breakouts:
    • Security Testing
    • Understanding MIMIX
    • What should your Business Partner be providing you
  • What you need to know to Successfully upgrade to IBM I 7.3 & 7.4
  • High Availability – Are you ready?
  • IBM Flash System External Storage and IBM i
  • iSee the iAdmin being iHappy
  • Perception vs Reality: IBM i Security
  • ACS Setup and the power of .properties file
  • External Storage benefits for IBM i
  • Wednesday Lunch Breakouts:
    • Managing Change and its Impact
    • Real Stories of Customer Success
    • VERIFi and VERIFi Security Advisor
  • Getting Started with VIOS
  • Installing and Configuring NVMe
  • Things to consider when Selecting an IBM i Cloud Provider
  • Enhancing IFS Save Performance.

We also sent packages to every early registered US attendee with a bunch of goodies inside. All I can say is thank you for bringing us into your home, and allowing us to help you with your IBM i knowledge.

If you missed the event, you can still join us for an iAdmin After Party Live Q&A happening Friday, November 6th at 11 AM EST.

Of course, we are continuing with our other educational sessions for the rest of the year with IBM i webinars, weekly Sips and Tricks, blogs, newsletters, iTips videos, Podcast Episodes, and Virtual Meetups. This was the 71st virtual iTech webinar styled event of 2020 to date. Not the 71st session, because we did 26 sessions over those 2 days at iAdmin. This was our 71st event. WOW, that is a lot that we are helping our customers and non-customers with.

I understand some of you already have another IBM business partner you work with, but I have to ask what are they doing for you and your organization? What is the extent of communication and education you are receiving from your current BP? Are they providing you with resources such as blogs, webinars, podcasts, quick how-to videos, or monthly newsletters? Are you just another name in their CRM, or does your business partner consider themselves an extension of your team? At iTech Solutions, we invest a lot in the IBM i community. We want to ensure that our clients, partners, vendors, and yes – even competitors have access to high-quality IBM i education.

We will be happy to discuss the issues that you might be having and come up with solutions to meet your needs.  A simple phone call 203-744-7854 or book a meeting with us is all you need to do to take the first step.

Introducing: iBasics

On November 18th, we are going to be starting a new 14 week series, called IBM i Admin Basics, referred to as iBasics. These weekly sessions will cover the basics of IBM i, helping new people be able to learn about IBM i System Admin. If you have someone in your company who would benefit from these, you can sign up for updates at info.itechsol.com/ibasics. These will take place at 11AM EST on Wednesdays each week, except for Holiday weeks. So the actual sessions will take about 20 weeks to cover the 14 weekly topics.

End of Support for POWER7 and IBM i 7.2

People keep asking me what is going out of support and when. Let’s just summarize this. Power7 (B&C models) machines are already no longer supported, Power7+ machines (D models) machines, they come to end of support Dec 31, 2020.  Then there is IBM i 7.2, this goes out of support April 30, 2021.  It’s time to upgrade. We can get you into a new Power9 with twice the performance than what you are paying for a few years of maintenance, which is a no brainer.  For less than the cost of one year of Extended Support for 7.2, we can do an OS Upgrade to either 7.3 or 7.4.  Why are you waiting?

IBM i Hangouts

We have two Hangouts scheduled for November.  The first is a System Administrator Hangout with a focus on Security, which will be Tuesday, November 10th at 3:00pm ET.  This is a chance to just “hangout” with us and your peers and discuss the topic, but anyone can ask a question on any IBM i topic.  You can have your camera on or off, but we can all help one another with issues that we may be having in the area of IBM i security.

Our second hangout in November is Friday November 13th at 1:00pm which will be a Women in IBM i hangout. Some of the iTech ladies will be discussing sources of inspiration, mentorship, ways to stay active in the IBM i community, and ways to overcome challenges. I hope you will join them, and together learn from one another. So don’t be shy and join the hangouts, and if you have an idea, you can email marketing@itechsol.com to add your suggestion.

Do you have a ProtecTIER System? Are you aware that support for those systems ends in November 2020?  Let us help you migrate to a supported Virtual Tape Library. Easy, faster, and newer options will make this a smart decision.

Stay safe, wash your hands, wear that annoying mask, and take care of one another.   I look forward to seeing everyone when this is all over at the many conferences we will be attending.
