September 2020 Newsletter

Autumn is here, and no — that doesn’t mean pumpkin spice. It means conference season starts again. Yes, this year will be like no other, but last week was COMMON’s POWERUp conference that was originally scheduled to happen in the spring, and was pushed back to last week and held virtually. It’s always a great conference and this year was no different, but I did miss the face-to-face interaction and getting together with friends. Hopefully, we can get together next year. I really hope by next year we can get back to being social creatures again, I am getting tired of social distancing.

Speaking of conferences, we have our iADMIN conference scheduled for Tuesday, October 20th, and Wednesday, October 21st.  Right now we have a little over 600 people registered for the event, so we are looking forward to sharing our knowledge and helping the IBM i community. Those in the US who have registered will be receiving a package in the mail with goodies at the beginning of October, so keep a lookout for that.  This is a two-day live event, where you will see the speaker as they present, ask questions, and have the best seat in the house.

Plus we plan to have a Q&A panel at the end of the conference with our speakers so you can ask questions. On Tuesday night, we will break into a few virtual Happy Hour sessions on specific topics so that people can get together and discuss topics that they have interest and/or questions. Like a birds-of-a-feather session. This will be all interactive, with the ability for everyone to have their video connection up and running if they wish. That is a lot of education, and there will be no charge to anyone in the IBM i community. Of course, we are continuing with our other educational sessions for the rest of the year with IBM i webinars, weekly Sips and Tricks, blogs, newsletters, iTip Videos, and Virtual Meetups.

If you have been reading our newsletters, you probably know what I am going to ask you next. Is your current business partner doing ½, no — even a ¼ of what we are doing to help you out? If the answer is no, then perhaps it’s time to switch.  It’s easy — just give us a call and tell us to show you just how good we are. We will be happy to discuss the issues that you might be having, and come up with solutions to meet your needs.  A simple phone call 203-744-7854 or email That’s all you need to do to take the first step.

Did you know that today is National Coffee Day? Since we can’t be in person to buy you a coffee and discuss your IBM i issues, we thought what better way to celebrate than have an all-day Best of Sips & Tricks marathon. We will be running our Top 10 sessions of previously seen Sips and Tricks that day. It’s the best of the best. I hope you can clear your calendar, sit in a comfortable chair, and relax with a nice hot cup of coffee (or tea) and enjoy our all-day sessions of the best of sips and tricks.

In November, we are going to be starting a new 14 week series, called iAdmin Basics, these weekly sessions will cover the basics of IBM i, with the goal of helping new people learn about IBM i System Admin.  If you have someone in your company who would benefit from these, check out our website next month when registration opens up.

End of Support for POWER7 & IBM i 7.2

People keep asking me what is going out of support and when. Let’s just summarize this. Power7 (B&C models) machines are already no longer supported, and Power7+ machines (D models) machines come to end of support Dec 31, 2020.  Then there is IBM i 7.2, and this goes out of support on April 30, 2021.  Its time to upgrade.

We can get you into a new Power9 with twice the performance than what you are paying for a few years of maintenance, which is a no brainer. For less than the cost of one year of Extended Support for 7.2, we can do an OS Upgrade to either 7.3 or 7.4. Why are you waiting?

Connecting Virtually

We had our first hangout last month, and it took virtual interaction to a new level.  If you aren’t familiar with a hangout, this is where we have an informal “hangout” just talking and discussing IBM i Admin issues.  You can liken this to a conference, where a group of admins meet in the hotel bar over a beer and just discuss the issues of their jobs. I find this one of the most valuable aspects of an in-person conference, and where I learn so much. We invited Admins to come and hang out with the iTech Staff in a virtual meeting, where anyone could speak and share information. In the age of COVID-19, everyone said it was refreshing to be able to interact with one another. We have our next IBM i Admin hangout coming up on Sept 30 with the focus being Backup and Recovery, but anyone can ask a question on any IBM i topic. The following one is November 11th, and the focus has yet to be determined.

On November 13th, we are hosting another Women in IBM i virtual hangout, with some of the iTech ladies. They will be discussing the issues and challenges that women face in the IBM i community, and the ways they have learned to succeed and stay involved. We’ve also created a Women in IBM i LinkedIn group that you are welcome to join to stay connected with other women in the IBM i community. More details to follow, and I know they are always looking for ideas and topics, so don’t be shy and contribute by emailing

Please welcome Amal MacDonald to our staff as a Security Sales Executive.  She was formerly with Syncsort and Cilasoft and will be a great asset to our customers as she helps them get the resources they need to fill gaps in their security. You can reach out to her at, and connect with her on LinkedIn here.
